Today, I had an idea. It was a small idea…barely a germ in my brain — one that seemed practical. This is a business idea. I have lots of those.
I’ve got a lot of research and discovery to do before I start implementing or revealing, but the idea is there.
I tell you this not because I’m going to try to sell this idea to you in the future, but to remind you not to ignore the ideas that maybe don’t seem so grand at the moment.
This idea popped into my head earlier today. Like I said, it seemed practical. It made sense direction-wise, and it had some facets that seemed growable. I could have ignored it. Practical ideas can look just plain boring when stacked up next to an exciting idea that bursts through your brain like a fireball.
Be aware of these little ideas, because they might grow into something totally cool. I noted the idea I had in the middle of the day, then moved on with what I was doing. Then, as I was lifting this evening, an outline and mind-map started drawing itself in my brain. I didn’t actively think about any of this, but ideas and directions just started popping into my head, left and right.
The funny thing is that they all grew from this practical (you could even call it potentially boring) idea I had hours earlier. But the growing idea had some fire to it. It still wasn’t a fireball idea, but it seemed grounded…real.
I’m going to explore this idea for a while, and flesh out what it could potentially become. We’ll see where this road takes me.
If you have ideas like that — small, maybe boring, and overtly practical — and you’re tempted to throw them away, just wait. Keep them in your brain (or notebook if your brain is no good), and see if the idea grows. Don’t discount something just because it’s not the “big thing” you’re looking for. Given some time and motivation, it might become just what you want.
