Today, as I write this, it’s my birthday. This will be published the day after my birthday, but today it’s it. It’s been a good day, but I’ve been wondering about something the last couple of days.
If you’re not satisfied in life, and you want change, what’s the rush? I know all about feeling the need to create change, and do it right now. There’s really nothing wrong with that — it’s a good thing to want to better yourself or your situation in some way. Though I wonder if it all needs to be done right now.
Part of the stress I’ve felt over the last few years is needing change to happen immediately. So I ask myself, “What’s the rush?” If I want change — a better job, a new career, a new skill, whatever — why do I feel the need to have it all magically appear in my lap the minute I desire it?
It’s funny because I’m not really an impatient guy. I know things take time. Yet I still find myself having to actively push back the stress caused by things not happening as fast as I want them to.
If you want change to happen in your life, don’t try to rush it. Unless you’re close to death (from old age or disease), you really have plenty of time. If you want change, it’s OK for it to happen over the course of two, or five, or more years.
Besides, gradual change tends to stick.
